frequently asked questions
- How safe is anesthesia for my child?
- The use of sedation and anesthesia in dentistry has a commendable record of safety. This is due to the advanced training your anesthesiologist has and his/her commitment to your child’s health. It is important to advise your doctor of all medications that your child may be taking as well as any changes in your child’s medical history since his/her last visit.
- Is my child monitored?
- Your child will be monitored with the same level of acute vigilance and equipment that is used in the hospital setting. Dr. Barnes will remain with your child thought the entire procedure to safely monitor and interpret your child’s vital signs.
- Do you have an emergency cart?
- Dr. Barnes ensures that each office is equipped with an emergency cart. This cart is stocked with all the medications necessary to delivery quality anesthesia care as well as all the medications necessary for handling any emergency.
- Will my child be able to eat or drink before the procedure?
- No! Sedation/Anesthesia can relax the normal protective gag reflex. A child with a full stomach makes him/her prone to aspirating his/her stomach content into the lungs. Therefore, it is recommended that your child should not eat for 6 hours nor drink within 3 hours before the scheduled procedure.
- Will my child be able to eat or drink after the procedure?
- No! Your child will not be able to eat or drink immediately after the procedure. It is strongly recommended that you allow your child to sleep a minimum of one hour after having been discharged home. This time will allow them to fully recover from the residual effect of the anesthesia, therefore reducing the possibility of post surgical vomiting and aspiration.
- Will my child remember the procedure?
- Your child will have no memory of the procedure.
